The Ministry of Health has announced significant progress in improving conditions for health workers, revealing that 13,500 nurses have now been integrated into the government payroll.
In a statement, the Ministry disclosed that the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) paid a courtesy call on the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
During the meeting, the GRNMA delegation rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister for a recent media attack on his person and discussed strategies to strengthen collaboration between nurses and the government.
Highlighting some key achievements, the Ministry stated that the government has established the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF) and made major investments in retooling health facilities nationwide.
The statement also confirmed that arrears on nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance claims have been fully settled. Additionally, the government has absorbed 50% of admission fees for students in nursing training institutions.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of the collective bargaining agreement with the GRNMA to improve conditions of service for nurses, emphasizing that these measures are part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
It urged stakeholders and the general public to remain calm, assuring that the government remains dedicated to resolving challenges within the health sector.
The GRNMA delegation included immediate past President Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, current President Dr. Krobea Asante, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.
