The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has honoured its pledge to reward Lance Corporal Solomon Asare Teye-Tsu, the young soldier celebrated for rejecting a bribe from illegal miners at his duty post at the Bibiani Gold Mines in the Western North Region.
As part of the reward package announced in July this year by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu has been deployed to serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He left the country last week as part of Ghanaian Battalion 92, following a five-week intensive training at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS) at the Battle Training Camp, Bundase.
L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu’s promotion and nomination for peacekeeping were first announced at an all-rank durbar held at the Burma Hall, Burma Camp, on Friday, July 11, 2025.
During that ceremony, the 30-year-old soldier, then a Private with the Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal, immediately recognised with a citation, and nominated for peacekeeping duties.
The recognition came after Teye-Tsu’s act of integrity in late 2024, when he was on official guard duty at the Bibiani Gold Mines. A group of artisanal miners attempted to bribe him with a substantial sum of money to gain access to their illegal mining pits.
Driven by patriotism and duty, he not only rejected the bribe but also arrested the illegal miners and handed them over to authorities for prosecution. His decisive action won admiration from his colleagues, the GAF, and the management of Ojeyz Security Limited, the private firm providing security at the mine.
The former Defence Minister, the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, also praised Teye-Tsu’s courage and pledged a GHC 10,000 incentive during the July ceremony. Unfortunately, Dr. Boamah lost his life, along with seven others, in a tragic helicopter crash before he could fulfil the promise.
L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu enlisted in the Ghana Armed Forces in 2023. He hails from Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region and is a product of Manya Krobo Senior High School and King David College, both in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality. He is also a member of the Krobo-based youth network, Kloma Gbi (Voice of the Krobo States).
