Comedian Abdul Waris Umaru, popularly known as Comedian Waris, believes comedy has not been fully embraced within the Muslim community in Ghana.
He explained that the reason is well known among members of the community, which makes it quite challenging to create jokes related to Islam.
However, he stated that he is prepared to receive criticism, as he plans to begin creating comic content inspired by the Muslim community.
This response came after he was asked during an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes show whether he would ever venture into Islamic comedy.
“Comedy has not been exploited well in the Ghanaian Muslim society. Honestly, I’m not going to lie and our Muslim communities know. So when you talk about it, few people will laugh and the rest will take it to heart. Now wey they dey come beat me because few of them would relate and the rest will take it at heart,” he told the host Roselyn Felli.
Comedian Waris has assured that he will dedicate time to teaching and training young Muslims who are interested in content creation, helping them turn it into a viable source of income.
He also aims to support them in monetizing their platforms to avoid controversy and generate revenue.
“I’ll take it out and teach them how to use social media, how to sell, how to follow a logarithm, how to reach their targeted audience and if those who want to be creators and monetize, I’ll also teach them the path to monetize their page,” he said.
