The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has reconstituted the leadership of the Ashanti Regional Armwrestling Association as part of its efforts to strengthen the development and promotion of the sport in the region. The move aims to take armwrestling to new heights and make it a household sport across the Ashanti Region.
The newly constituted regional leadership includes Mr. Kwabena Osei Tutu, Manager at Sikka FM, as Chairman; Mr. Philip Frazier Marvin Norman of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly as Vice Chairman; Ms. Sylvia Darko of the National Sports Authority as Secretary; Mr. Patrick Lartey of the Ghana Education Service as Technical Head; Mr. Sylvester Anane, a media practitioner, as Public Relations Officer; and Mr. Robert Amuzu as Member.
Mandate of the Regional Executives
The new leadership’s mandate includes:
- Developing and promoting armwrestling in schools and communities within the Ashanti Region.
- Sanctioning and managing armwrestling activities and competitions.
- Establishing armwrestling clubs to nurture young talent and encourage participation.
- Creating a regional armwrestling league to provide a competitive platform for athletes.
- Soliciting support and partnerships to promote the growth of armwrestling.
- Organising an annual regional congress to bring stakeholders together to discuss the sport’s development.
- Providing training and capacity-building programmes for coaches, officials, and athletes to enhance skills and technical knowledge.
The leadership is also expected to foster collaborations with national and international partners, identify and nurture emerging talent, and increase grassroots participation to build a strong foundation for the sport in the region.
Chairman’s Commitment
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Kwabena Osei Tutu, who has served in various armwrestling roles over the years, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged his commitment to the sport’s growth.
“I am honoured to lead the Ashanti Region Armwrestling team and contribute to the development of this exciting sport. With the support of our athletes, coaches, and stakeholders, I am confident that we will achieve great things, produce global champions, and bring glory to our region,” he stated.
Vice Chairman Mr. Marvin Norman also expressed enthusiasm about his new role.
“Armwrestling is indigenous and popular. I am proud to serve the Ashanti Region and work with our talented athletes to promote the sport and achieve success. Our recent performances at the African Games, where athletes from this region won medals for Ghana, demonstrate our potential. I am excited to see what the future holds for our team and the region,” he said.
Next Steps
The regional team plans to roll out a “Training of Trainers” programme and organise school competitions in the coming days to identify new talent and commence development initiatives.
In a related development, the Regional Director of Sports under the National Sports Authority, Nana Gyamaa, has welcomed the new leadership and pledged her full support to ensure that armwrestling in the Ashanti Region grows even stronger.
She noted that with teamwork and a winning mentality, the Ashanti Region Armwrestling team is poised to make a lasting impression in the sport.
