Calm has returned to Garu in the Upper East Region following a deadly shooting incident on Monday that left four people, including the headmaster of Garu D/A Basic School, dead.
According to JoyNews Upper East Regional Correspondent, Albert Sore, the headmaster was among the victims fatally shot when armed men opened fire in the community.
“The headmaster was not even at the NHIS office where the gunmen reportedly attacked. He was walking, probably from or towards the school, when he was shot,” Albert Sore reported.
The attackers, believed to be four armed men riding on two motorbikes, are said to have stormed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in Garu, shooting indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Sources say the gunmen fired multiple shots in the community during their escape, leaving residents terrified and forcing many to flee for safety.
Although calm has since been restored, school activities at Garu D/A Basic School have been suspended following directives from the District Education Directorate due to the trauma experienced by students who witnessed the incident.
“Because of the trauma some of the students went through when their headmaster was shot, they have been asked not to come to school today,” the report added.
Security personnel have since intensified patrols in the area, while investigations continue to uncover the motive behind the attack and identify the assailants.
Residents have called for increased police presence to ensure their safety and prevent further violence in the district.
