Legal practitioner and lecturer at the Ghana School of Law, Bobby Banson, has called for the separation of the Attorney-General’s Department from the Ministry of Justice to enhance the country’s fight against corruption.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, Mr Banson argued that under the current legal framework, the Attorney-General’s office cannot simultaneously serve as both prosecutor and witness in cases it is handling.
He noted that this overlap may create conflicts of interest and weakens the effectiveness of anti-corruption prosecutions.
According to him, “when I listen to the Attorney General in these press conferences, it embodies my advocacy that perhaps it is time for us to actually decouple the office of the Attorney General from the Minister of Justice."
He explained that, "The reason been that the Attorney General cannot be a witness in a case that he is prosecuting so all the things that he is saying, he cannot go and stand in the courtroom to testify."
Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, who was also on the programme, made a similar call, emphasising that institutional independence is crucial to restoring public trust and ensuring accountability in governance.
They made the call in the wake of a recent press engagement by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, on major corruption scandals currently plaguing the country.
