As part of World Prematurity Month, Elizabeth Promise Crab shared her emotional story of survival and motherhood on Joy Prime's morning show.
She recounted how a car accident at five months pregnant led to the premature birth of her baby and a long, difficult recovery journey.
Elizabeth was involved in a car crash that caused her water to break unexpectedly.
“The doctors told me it was a Premature Rupture of Membranes,” she recalled. “I was scared, but I held on to hope,” she said.
She was rushed to hospital and treated with Dexamethasone to help her baby’s lungs develop. Despite losing 70 per cent of her amniotic fluid, she stayed on bed rest for more than a month and managed to carry her pregnancy to 31 weeks.
At 31 weeks, Elizabeth delivered her baby naturally and committed herself to learning how to care for a premature infant. “Even burping a preemie takes time and patience,” she said. “You have to make sure the baby sleeps on the side to avoid suffocation.”
Beyond the medical challenges, she faced public stigma. “People would look at me and judge because my baby was small,” she revealed. “But giving birth to a preemie is not a curse.”
Her account stands as a testament to resilience, faith and a mother’s unconditional love. She also called for compassion and support for families with premature babies. “Support and understanding can make all the difference,” she added.
