Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed deep concern over the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, urging collective action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He called on all stakeholders to work together to address the underlying issues that led to the tragedy, emphasising the urgency of finding a lasting solution.
“We can all work together and find a solution to this problem; if not, the future may be even more terrifying than what we've experienced today,” he said.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, when Members of Parliament made statements on the matter, Speaker Bagbin conveyed condolences to the families of the six deceased and extended prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Defence, emergency personnel, and ambulance services in responding to the tragedy.
“On behalf of the House, I humbly convey our deepest condolences to the parents and families of the deceased. We pray for the speedy healing and recovery of the injured.
"We also sympathise with the Ministry of Defence and call on the leadership to remain composed in handling this matter. We sincerely thank the help personnel and Ambulance Services who rushed to attend to the injured and the deceased,” he said.
The Speaker further urged parliamentary leaders to accompany him to visit the injured at the 37 Military Hospital, emphasising the importance of understanding the situation on the ground before discussing next steps.
“I want leadership to accompany me so that we can visit the injured. Together, we may later discuss what to do next,” he said.
