The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially taken up a seat on the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Board of Trustees, following its confirmation as a government-sanctioned public institution within the country’s education governance structure.
The President of NUGS, Daniel Nii Korley Botchway, was sworn in as a member of the 7th GETFund Board on Friday, April 11, 2025. His induction was conducted by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a ceremony held at the GETFund Secretariat in Accra.
NUGS’ inclusion forms part of the government’s recognition of the Union as a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, mandated to represent the interests of Ghanaian students locally and abroad.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Education Minister underscored the need for stronger stakeholder participation in shaping the future of Ghana’s education financing.
He noted that the presence of NUGS on the Board would ensure that policy decisions reflect the realities and concerns of students across the country.
The development is particularly significant as GETFund now finances key educational interventions—including school infrastructure, learning resources, scholarships and student loans—after the government directed that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme be fully funded by the Fund.
In a statement following the inauguration, NUGS congratulated all members of the newly constituted Board and reaffirmed its readiness to contribute meaningfully to national education development.
“NUGS remains committed, not only as a union but as a recognised public institution, to working with government and stakeholders to promote transparency, accountability, and improved learning outcomes for Ghanaian students,” the statement said.
The four-year mandate of the new GETFund Board is expected to focus on strengthening the Fund’s governance, improving resource allocation, and addressing longstanding concerns about delays in disbursements to educational institutions.
