The Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) in the Eastern Region has launched an extensive legal drive to recover over GHC32 million owed by long-term defaulters, a debt the company says is affecting its ability to operate efficiently and improve water services.
In the first phase of the campaign, 15 customers have been summoned to appear in court in the coming days.
GWL’s legal team indicated that more names will be added as the drive continues, focusing on customers who have ignored repeated reminders, accumulated long-term arrears, or refused payment even after disconnection.
The action also targets individuals and businesses relying on alternative water sources, such as boreholes and wells, without clearing their outstanding bills.
Regional Chief Manager, Ing. Paul C. Akpanya, emphasised the company’s commitment:
“We will go the extra mile within the remit of the law to recover every arrear owed the company. This is essential for sustaining our operations and improving service delivery to the public,” he said.
The initial batch of cases filed by GWL includes a combination of commercial and residential customers, such as
- Jilcom (Suhum roundabout Shell Station)
- Petroleum & Construction Ltd.
- Constance Baafi
- Ebenezer Larbi Opare
- Yomboi EA Adu
- Dora James Okyere
- KAMA Group of Companies (Regional Director of Health)
- Paulina Donkor
- Richard Boadu
- Felicia Okyere Darko
- F. A. Mpare
- Taylor Posiah & Oduro
- Patrick Ernest Obeng
- Kwame
GWL stressed that recovering these arrears is crucial for sustaining operations, expanding infrastructure, and ensuring a reliable water supply across the Eastern Region.
The company is urging all customers in arrears to visit their nearest district office or use available electronic payment channels to settle their debts promptly.
