Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has called on former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to return to Ghana to answer to criminal charges levelled against him, assuring that he will be accorded due process and personal safety.
Dr Ayine said this during the Government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, December 17, stressing that the administration remains committed to upholding the rule of law without malice or political vendetta.
He emphasised that no harm would come to the former minister should he honour the call to face justice.
"We have taken the requisite steps to bring him to Ghana to face trials, and if I were him, this is his home; he should just join the next flight and come here. Under my watch, he will not be treated unfairly; he will go through due process and be prosecuted just like any other person," he said.
Mr Ofori-Atta has been in the United States since January this year on health grounds, a claim that has been questioned by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which has since slapped him and others with 78 charges of corruption and corruption-related offences.
The Attorney-General announced that the government has formally submitted a request to the United States authorities for his extradition, along with his aide, Ernest Akore.
