Large crowds of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters on Monday flooded parts of the Eastern Region as flagbearer hopeful and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, took his nationwide engagement tour to the area, pledging to rebuild the party around grassroots empowerment, discipline, unity and integrity.
The former Minister for Food and Agriculture met party delegates and supporters in towns including Kade, Akwatia, Asamankese, Oda, Akoroso, Achiansi and Akim Swedru, where enthusiastic crowds lined the roads, chanting “Sei kutuuu, sei Bam” in a show of support for his campaign message.
Addressing gatherings at various stops, Dr Acheampong said the NPP must evolve into a more disciplined, accountable and people-centred organisation if it hopes to regain the confidence of Ghanaians ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“Our party must return to its core values of service, integrity and respect for structures. Without discipline and unity, we cannot win back the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
He stressed that the voices of grassroots members must be central to decision-making, describing them as the backbone of the party’s electoral success. According to him, rebuilding trust between party leadership and the base is key to forming a stronger and more responsive NPP.
Dr Acheampong’s Eastern Region tour follows his recent visits to all 276 constituencies nationwide as part of his consultations with party delegates ahead of the NPP’s internal presidential primaries.
The NPP is expected to elect a new flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections, following its loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 polls.
Political observers say the ongoing tours by aspirants reflect growing internal competition and the party’s attempt to reconnect with its base after its defeat.
Dr Acheampong, however, believes unity will be crucial in the days ahead.
“We must not allow our internal contest to divide us. When this process is over, we must come together as one party, ready to work for victory,” he added.
His campaign team says similar engagements will continue across other regions in the coming weeks.
