Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manage its internal differences carefully ahead of its January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.
Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, Dr Asah-Asante said it was incumbent on the party’s leadership and aspirants to ensure a peaceful contest, stressing that the party was already grappling with internal challenges.
“With the problems within the party, they must make sure the election is peaceful, that those who lose accept defeat and abide by the rules of the game. Beyond that, supporters must rally behind the winner," he said.
Dr Asah-Asante warned that recent campaign exchanges could complicate post-primary unity, noting that aspirants who had publicly attacked one another might struggle to mobilise support if they emerged victorious.
His comments follow the signing of a peace pact by all five NPP presidential aspirants on Thursday, committing to unity, respect for the electoral process, and support for the eventual winner.
The aspirants are Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong.
The agreement is aimed at preventing post-primary divisions as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
