The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has scheduled Wednesday, January 28, for the vetting of the five aspirants seeking to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat on the party’s ticket.
Among the aspirants are Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, both of whom successfully filed their nominations on Tuesday.
The other contenders are the NDC’s Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Dr Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed Sani.
Speaking on Citi FM on Tuesday, January 27, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections, Rashid Tanko Computer, said the vetting would be followed immediately by balloting to determine candidates’ positions on the ballot paper.
He explained that the party has put in place mechanisms to address any concerns that may arise after the vetting and balloting process, in order to ensure a transparent and peaceful primary.
“We will vet all five aspirants and then proceed with balloting. If there is any aggrieved candidate, the committee will sit to hear the matter before we move on to printing the ballot papers for the Electoral Commission to conduct the primary on February 7, 2026,” he stated.
The Electoral Commission has announced that the parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency will be held on Tuesday, March 3, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament.
