The Blekusu Coastal Protection Project has reached 25 per cent completion, offering much-needed relief to communities repeatedly affected by tidal waves, the Minister of Works and Housing, Gilbert Kenneth Adjei, has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 28, the Minister noted that the progress honours a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama during his visit to impacted coastal areas last year.
Mr Adjei recalled that in March 2025, President Mahama toured Solakokpe, Agavedzi, and Amutinu in the Ketu South Municipality after tidal waves displaced thousands of residents and destroyed homes and livelihoods.
The President had assured affected communities that decisive action would be taken, a pledge now being realised.
“Currently, the project is 25 per cent complete and already, calm has been restored along the coastline,” the Minister stated.
He further revealed that the Lower Volta Basin Sea Defence Corridor has been included in Phase Two of the World Bank-supported West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Project, with technical assessments and environmental impact studies currently underway.
Feasibility studies have also begun for future coastal protection initiatives at Shama–Apor, Ningo–Prampram Phase Two, and Ada West, as part of the government’s broader strategy to safeguard vulnerable coastal communities.
