The Presidency has described allegations of improper practices in the award of overseas scholarships as a matter of “grave public concern” and has ordered an immediate investigation by the National Investigation Bureau.
The directive follows a radio discussion aired on Sompa 106.5 FM, during which a panellist, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, alleged that an individual paid money to secure a scholarship to pursue studies abroad.
According to the Presidency, the discussion, conducted in Twi, has since gained wide public circulation and drawn the President's attention.
After reviewing the broadcast, the President concluded that the allegation was serious, particularly against the backdrop of government’s stated commitment to “transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities.”
In response, the President has formally directed the National Investigation Bureau to “immediately investigate the allegation” and to establish its factual basis.
The directive instructs the Bureau to identify any persons involved and to determine “the veracity or otherwise of the claims made” during the radio discussion.
The NIB has also been tasked with submitting its findings to the President for consideration and “any appropriate action that may arise therefrom.”
The Presidency’s intervention signals a swift response to claims that could undermine public confidence in the administration of scholarship and access to educational opportunities.
The matter has generated public interest following the widespread circulation of the radio discussion, with concerns raised about fairness and accountability in awarding scholarships for study abroad.
The directive was formally communicated to the Director-General of the National Investigation Bureau and signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, PhD.
The letter closed with assurances conveyed on behalf of the President of the Republic.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine the credibility of the allegation and whether further action will be taken.
