Ghanaian songstress and songwriter Sefa, born Sefadzi Abena Amesu, has shared how impactful her former record label, Black Avenue Muzik, has been in her music journey.
In an interview on Changes on Joy Prime, she stated that the label has been an integral part of her beginnings and that she can never be bigger than the label.
“I can never be bigger than Black Avenue Muzik. The reason why I’m saying that is because Black Avenue Muzik started me and you can never be bigger than your roots. It’s the foundation of your whole growth so you can never be bigger than your roots.”
She further emphasized that the label groomed her into who she is today, debunking claims that she was ever impeded by the record label.
As for why she eventually parted ways with the label, Sefa explained that she felt the need to explore other opportunities as an independent artiste.
“I want to spread my wings and evolve as an artiste. Black Avenue Muzik has never impeded me or anything; I always say that Black Avenue Muzik has taught me a lot. Even me being an independent artiste right now, there’s a lot that I’ve learned that is helping me. It’s like the soil that I’m using to grow my plant,” she added.
The ‘Fever’ hitmaker expressed that she is grateful for the support she received from Black Avenue Muzik. However, she said she wanted to know what “breathing outside of my company” felt like.
