Municipal Chief Executive of Oforikrom, Anwel Sadat Ahmed, has emphasised that Ghana, with its rich human and natural resources, can only thrive if the citizenry collectively pursues the nationalistic goals for socioeconomic transformation.

Commemorating the 69th Independence Day with a colourful parade at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the MCE called on residents to embrace unity and hard work to foster development.

Mr Ahmed emphasised that prosperity is not achieved only by chance but through deliberate effort, discipline, innovation, integrity, and hard work.

Delivering his address at the ceremony, the MCE noted that this year’s celebration, themed “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” underscores the need for collective commitment and dedication to national growth.

He explained that the theme highlights the importance of unity and diligence in achieving sustainable progress as a nation.

“As a nation endowed with abundant natural resources and rich human capital, we possess the tools necessary for economic transformation. What we need most is unity and hard work to harness these opportunities,” he stated.

The parade brought together students from various schools across the municipality, who marched in unison at the KNUST campus to symbolise Ghana’s freedom and national pride.

Member of Parliament for the Oforikrom Constituency, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, also stressed that true prosperity begins with patriotism.

“Let us love our country not only in words but also in deeds. Patriotism means protecting our environment, supporting local businesses, and upholding the rule of law,” he urged.

He encouraged the students who participated in the parade to march with purpose, noting that their steps must reflect discipline, unity, and ambition for a brighter future.

Municipal Director of Education, Dorothy Opare-Baidoo, also elaborated the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope” as a call for deep reflection on the role every citizen must play in creating opportunities and ensuring dignity for all.

“As stewards of education, we know that schools and teachers stand at the very heart of turning this theme into reality,” she noted.

According to her, building prosperity goes beyond economic growth and includes restoring hope within communities and the nation as a whole.

“Education is the foundation that equips our young people with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to contribute meaningfully to society,” she added.

At the end of the parade, the KNUST Senior High School emerged winners in the senior high school category of the 2026 march-past competition in Oforikrom while Global Evangelical Basic School topped the basic school category.

Meanwhile, about ten students fainted during the parade, however the ambulance service swiftly responded and provided immediate medical attention to the affected students.
