The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has called for party unity and cohesion to propel the party to greater heights.
He has therefore cautioned members against internal wrangling and attempts to undermine one another, which can destroy relationships in pursuit of political power.
Mr Gbande made the call at a meeting with party executives from various constituencies, ward coordinators, assembly members and metropolitan, municipal and district executives (MMDCEs) in the Volta Region last Wednesday.
The meeting also addressed grievances ahead of the party's upcoming constituency elections and strengthened the party's grassroots structures in the region.
It was also to kick-start town hall engagements to be led by MMDCEs, with support from Members of Parliament and party structures, to account to constituents on the performance and achievements of the government, MPs and chief executives.
The engagements, he said, were expected to allow the party and government representatives to communicate directly with constituents while responding to grassroots concerns.
He said the growing tendency among some party members to undermine one another posed serious threat to the NDC and the government.
He reminded the party members that power and influence should not lead people to seek the downfall of others.
Mr Gbande, who is also the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, said comradeship within the party appeared to be weakening, with members increasingly driven by personal interests rather than the collective good.
“Comradeship is dying in the NDC. Envy has become the order of the day,” he said, cautioning that political power should not become a reason for party members to destroy one another over narrow interests.
"Yet we go to church. In the shrines, there are principles. In the Quran there are principles that you don't do to others what you don't want done to you," he stated.
Mr Gbande said principles of fairness and consideration for others should guide people's conduct, regardless of their religious or cultural background.
That, he explained, was because circumstances could change and those who appear powerful might not remain in that position forever.
Mr Gbande said such negative actions to undermine each other had consequences and warned against conspiracies aimed at ruining other people's lives, careers or reputations.
He cautioned that political power should not become a reason for party members to destroy one another over narrow interests.
He said the consequences of internal hostility might not be immediately apparent, urging members to remember that political fortunes could change.
“We know the beginning; we don't know the finish. We know today, but we don't know tomorrow,” he said.
