The Minority Caucus in Parliament has urged the government to promptly clear outstanding tuition and associated fees owed to Ghanaian students studying in the United Kingdom under government scholarships.

The caucus noted that numerous students have formally petitioned them over delays in fee payments, warning that the situation has reached a critical stage and could jeopardise both their academic progress and immigration status in the UK.

“Students on scholarship at Birmingham University in the UK have not had their fees paid. The immigration authorities in the UK are threatening to deport them. They have been given one week to come back home. We want to plead with you that if you can draw the attention of the Scholarship Secretariat to remit their fees because, Mr Speaker, the UK government has some strict procedure, and the students have been crying, and they sent a petition to us," Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised on the floor of parliament on Monday, March 16.

Currently, there are 36 Ghanaian PhD candidates in the UK. In November 2025, the President of the students, Prince Komla Bansah, noted that more than GH₵5.7 million was urgently required to settle outstanding tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic year.
