President John Mahama has reaffirmed his government's commitment to transforming the Upper West Region into a centre of academic excellence in Northern Ghana through sustained investment in education, water infrastructure, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.

The President made the commitment on Wednesday, July 8, when the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

He said the government is prioritising investments in education infrastructure, teacher development, digital learning, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to improve educational outcomes in the region.

"In education, we're investing in infrastructure, teacher development, digital learning, and technical and vocational education and training," President Mahama said.

He added that the government would continue collaborating with the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) and Dr Hilla Limann Technical University to position the region as a leading destination for higher education in Northern Ghana.

"We'll continue working with UBIDS and Dr Hilla Limann Technical University to position the region as a centre of academic excellence in Northern Ghana," he stated.

The President also outlined plans to improve access to safe water by expanding rural water supply systems, rehabilitating boreholes, and upgrading urban water infrastructure in the Wa Municipality and surrounding communities.

He also highlighted the region's potential to become a leader in renewable energy, particularly solar power, describing its climatic conditions as ideal for supporting schools, health facilities, and irrigation schemes.

"The region's favourable climate offers enormous potential for solar energy to power schools, health facilities and irrigation schemes," he noted.

President Mahama further assured the chiefs that the government would continue investing in rural electrification and digital infrastructure to ensure equitable access to opportunities for young people regardless of where they live.

"Government will continue supporting upgraded electrification and digital connectivity so that no young Ghanaian is disadvantaged by virtue of where they live," he said.
