President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing him as more than a colleague in government, but a trusted friend, loyal adviser and younger brother whose unwavering support remained constant throughout his political journey.

Speaking during the unveiling of a cenotaph in memory of the late Dr Omane Boamah at the Ministry of Defence, President Mahama reflected on the personal bond they shared, saying the former Minister for Defence stood firmly by him during some of the most defining moments of his political career.

The unveiling of the cenotaph followed a National Interfaith Memorial Service, which was held earlier in the day at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where political leaders, members of the Ghana Armed Forces, religious leaders, diplomats, family members and friends gathered to celebrate the life and service of the late statesman.

Delivering his tribute, President Mahama spoke with visible emotion as he recounted the relationship he shared with Dr Omane Boamah, describing him as one of the most dependable individuals he had ever worked with.

"He was a friend, a younger brother, a loyalist and a close adviser. His loyalty and love for me was undoubted," the President said.

He noted that Dr Omane Boamah remained steadfast in his support throughout the highs and lows of his political career, offering wise counsel and unwavering encouragement during critical moments.

"He stood by my side through all the momentous occasions of my political career," President Mahama added.

The President said the late minister's loyalty was never driven by personal ambition but by a genuine commitment to the ideals they both believed in and to the development of Ghana.

President Mahama described Dr Omane Boamah as a man of rare character whose humility, compassion and dedication distinguished him from many others in public life.

According to him, the late Defence Minister possessed qualities that made him not only an effective public servant but also an exceptional human being.

"Omane was a great human being. His kind is difficult to find in our world today," he remarked.

The President said Dr Omane Boamah consistently demonstrated integrity, professionalism and kindness in his interactions with colleagues, members of the security services and ordinary citizens.

He added that the late minister's commitment to national service and concern for the welfare of others earned him admiration across political divides.

President Mahama also expressed appreciation to the Ghana Armed Forces for organising the ceremonial honours in recognition of the late minister's distinguished service to the country.

He described the unveiling of the cenotaph as a fitting tribute to a man who devoted himself to strengthening Ghana's defence institutions and safeguarding the country's peace and stability.

"I thank the Ghana Armed Forces for the honour being done for our former Minister today," he said.

The President noted that the military's decision to commemorate Dr Omane Boamah reflected the high regard in which he was held by the defence establishment and underscored the lasting impact of his leadership.

President Mahama observed that Dr Omane Boamah occupies a unique place in Ghana's history as the only Minister for Defence on record to have died while serving in office.

He described this as a solemn and historic moment for the nation, saying the late minister's passing represented not only a profound personal loss but also a significant loss to Ghana's public service.

"The only Defence Minister on record to have died in active service," the President stated.

He said this distinction further highlights the need to preserve Dr Omane Boamah's legacy and ensure that future generations understand the sacrifices he made in the service of the nation.
