Yendi Senior High School has secured a place at the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship after capitalising on a second opportunity at the Northern Regional qualifiers.

Yendi SHS produced a strong 50-point performance to defeat Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) and Dagbon State Senior High Technical School, ending NOBISCO’s hopes of making the national stage this year.

The qualification comes after a dramatic turn in Yendi SHS’s campaign.

The school had initially finished as first runner-up behind Tamale SHS in its first regional contest, leaving its hopes of reaching the national championship hanging in the balance.

However, the withdrawal of Kumbungu SHS created an additional route to qualification, giving Yendi SHS another opportunity to compete for a national ticket.

The school seized the opportunity with a much-improved performance, securing 50 points to win the contest and book its place at the national championship.

Yendi SHS will now join Tamale SHS, Ghana SHS-Tamale, Tamale Islamic Science SHS and Kalpohin SHS, which secured the region’s automatic qualification slots.

St. Charles Minor Seminary SHS and Tamale Girls’ SHS also earned places after finishing as the top runners-up and taking the region’s two additional qualification slots.

Yendi SHS’s qualification adds another twist to the Northern Region’s 2026 NSMQ campaign, with the school now set to compete against the country’s top science and mathematics institutions at the national championship.
