The Golden Star Resources Ladies Club intensified its breast care campaign by raising funds to support the fight against breast cancer in Ghana.
The GSR Ladies Club, which was inaugurated in the year 2010, has taken the initiative to campaign for breast cancer awareness, with education programs for women and girls, breast screening exercises in the catchment communities of Golden Star Resources, and fund raising to support Breast Care International (BCI).
In their 2014/2015 program, the Ladies Club, and major sponsor DHL Global Forwarding Ghana, were able to raise an amount of GHc 22,500.00 to support the Ghanaian NGO, Breast Care International. The Golden Star Ladies Club and BCI share the goal to raise breast cancer awareness not only for women, and girls, but also families, through awareness activities, and education.
Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Waife Addai, the Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospital, and the President of Breast Care International Ghana, urged families to seek good information, to dispel the myths that breast cancer is a spiritual disease or a curse. Only proper education will remove fears about treatments and raise awareness that early detection is the best protection, she noted.
BCI outreach programmes encourage women to do regular breast examination, and encourage men to support their female family members to participate in screening exercises.
The GHc 22,500.00 donation by the Club was made possible through the support of DHL Global Forwarding Ghana, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammernarbeit (GIZ), International SOS, Tri Pump Ghana, Primus Catering, VIVO Energy Ghana, Rana Motors, staff of Golden Star Resources and Ghana Health Services.
In another development, the president of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai has received another international award for her role in the education on breast cancer: the ESQR’s Quality achievements Award 2015 held in London.
