The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has described the collation process of the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary results as illegal.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, January 8, Dr. Tanko alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) are colluding to manipulate the election results in favour of the NPP candidate, Efua Afriyie.
According to Dr. Tanko, the chaos over the disputed pink sheet at the collation center was not surprising.
He accused the EC of bringing in scanned pink sheets after previously stating that they did not have the original documents.
“From the onset, we indicated that whatever is going on there [Ablekuma North] is a total illegality, and the NDC is not respecting anything coming from that process,” he stated.
The collation process was marred by a heated disagreement over the inclusion of a disputed pink sheet, delaying the collation process. The situation escalated into a physical altercation when NDC agents accused the EC and the NPP of attempting to rig the election.
Nathaniel Klimsman Avumeh, a Presiding Officer at one of the polling stations, added to the controversy by denying that he had authenticated figures from his station.
Tensions peaked when a party representative slammed the table of EC officials, sparking chaos between opposing party members. Police officers quickly intervened to restore order and prevent further disruptions.
Dr. Tanko-Computer criticised the EC, accusing it of disregarding legal protocols and court rulings. Referring to a previous Supreme Court ruling on December 21, which he claims invalidated a similar process, he said, “Why is this Electoral Commission so lawless? They want to defy all processes coming from the court and get away with it. We are not respecting anything coming from this process.”
He further warned that the NDC would challenge the outcome through legal channels.
“Even if they swear in these illegal candidates, we will pursue them legally. They won’t survive in Parliament because what they did is totally illegal, and we won’t allow it to rest,” Dr. Tanko stated.
