The Minority Chief Whip has cautioned the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu to stop accusing health workers of hoarding and selling government procured Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story said the accusation could demoralise the health workers as they combat the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
“At this time that health workers are literally risking their lives, the last thing we expect from the Health Minister is to demoralize them by alleging that some of them are stealing and reselling PPEs.”
The Health Minister whilst addressing the concerns of some health workers on Wednesday revealed that an investigation has revealed that some people have been hoarding government procured protective suits.
The Asawase MP, however, believes the Health Minister could have approached the issue in a better way than announcing publicly.
For Mr Muntaka, the best way would have been to identify such people, arrest and prosecute them to serve as a deterrent for others.
“You do not just come out at a national forum to and reveal that they[health workers] are stealing and reselling PPEs else you demoralize them.
“And the next question will be; who is the thief? So if you know the culprit just arrest and the prosecute the person.”
The Minority Chief Whip also indicated that if government had properly recorded the number of PPEs distributed across the country, such a situation won’t come up especially in this critical time.
Citing an example, he said: “If you [government] brought 1 million set of PPEs and with that 200,000 was sent to Ashanti Region, government could have easily question the whereabouts of PPEs distributed.”
“With that we would have been able to determine persons who have stolen or sold thePPEs.”
