Ghanaian economist Aephaniel Owusu-Agyemang is emerging as a thoughtful voice in economic analysis and policy discourse, driven by a commitment to leadership, academic excellence, and sustainable national development.
Born into a humble home, Owusu-Agyemang’s early years were shaped by discipline, curiosity, and an appreciation for learning. A defining childhood experience—watching the nation mourn the passing of former Finance Minister Hon. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu—sparked his earliest awareness of the power of economic leadership and public service. Though he did not yet understand the mechanics of economics, the moment left a lasting impression about impact, responsibility, and national transformation.
His formal educational journey began at the prestigious Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, where his leadership potential became evident. He served as a Preparatory Prefect, an early role that reflected his sense of responsibility, organisation, and service to others. This foundational experience marked the beginning of a steady rise in leadership across every stage of his academic life.
Owusu-Agyemang went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, where he developed a strong grounding in economic theory, public finance, and development economics. His growing interest in how economic policy intersects with national resources and long-term growth led him to further his studies.
He subsequently earned a postgraduate degree in Economics with specialisation in Energy and Natural Resource Economics, equipping him with advanced analytical skills in energy policy, oil and gas economics, econometrics, and sustainable resource management. His dedication to scholarship and academic excellence was recognised when he was named Postgraduate Student of the Year, a distinction that underscored his commitment to intellectual rigor and the economics discipline.
Beyond academics, Owusu-Agyemang has consistently demonstrated a passion for leadership and service. During his national service, he rose through advocacy and organisational roles to become Regional President of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA), Ashanti Region. In this capacity, he engaged in youth leadership, policy discussions, and development-focused initiatives, gaining first-hand experience in governance and public sector dynamics.
His professional journey culminated in earning the globally recognised designation of Certified Chartered Economist®, affirming both his technical competence and ethical commitment to the economics profession.
Owusu-Agyemang is also actively involved in public intellectual engagement. He contributes to national economic discourse through articles and opinion pieces published in leading Ghanaian platforms, including MyJoyOnline and Business & Financial Times. His writings focus on macroeconomic stability, energy policy, oil price dynamics, and the broader implications of economic decisions on Ghana’s growth trajectory.
Central to his work is a strong belief in the power of mentorship and inspiration. He is passionate about encouraging younger generations to pursue economics, leadership, and public policy, particularly in areas critical to Africa’s development.
