The Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, Angela Alorwu-Tay, has committed resources to promote sporting talents in her jurisdiction.
Her office partnered with the John Paintsil football Academy to scout footballers to nurture into professional players who can be marketed on the international market.
Identifying sports as a tool for development, Madam Alowu saw the need to invest in promoting soccer which she is optimistic would have various impacts on the constituents.
In the light of this, a 10-days scouting session is underway at Ve-Golokwati to identify football talents and nurture them.
Forty community teams are taking part in the session where five best performing players would be selected to join the John Paintsil Football Academy in Accra.
A set of 22 players would also be selected to form a lower division side, christened Afadzato Football Club.
A former Black Stars player and owner of the Academy, John Paintsil, who is in charge of the scouting exercise, said he was after young talents who have a fair idea of the game and are committed to becoming professional players.
“John Paintsil doesn't need to see you for 10, 20, 30, 90 minutes to know you are a footballer or you are talented. Get that right.”
“Your movement, your body language, your dressing, communication, first touch, running without the ball, pocket passes, locking your ankles, jumping, setting skills, leg overs, and many more. So if you have all these, there is no way John Paintsil Academy will leave you behind”, he stressed.
Madam Alorwu-Tay detailed that her office decided to undertake the initiative realizing the constituency is abound with lots of talents that were wasting away due to lack of support.
She said the constituents had also exhibited an interest in soccer hence the need to scout for players to form a football club for the constituency, which would serve as a channel to produce professional players.
“We want to make a name for the constituency by also folding international players. This is the reason we are partnering with John Paintsil to be able to groom our boys so we can also go out there to play for Ghana and any other team that will be interested in our players”, she added.
Coach Gospel Attivor, a member of the John Paintsil Football Academy Scouting Team, believes promoting sports in the area would reduce social vices.
The residents hope that the initiative would translate into economic growth to enhance their livelihoods.
