The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into various sectors will impact approximately 40 percent of the global workforce.
While acknowledging AI's role in enhancing productivity, the IMF warns that it may also lead to widespread job displacement in the foreseeable future.
During the 2024 IMF-World Bank Spring meeting in Washington DC, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasised the inevitability of AI's presence in the modern workforce.
She highlighted the need for employees to adapt to evolving technological trends and stay informed about the changing landscape of the digital revolution.
As AI continues to shape industries and redefine job roles, she urged individuals to embrace lifelong learning and skill development to remain competitive in the job market.
“A recent IMF study shows that artificial intelligence could affect up to 40 percent of jobs across the world and 60 percent in advanced economies."
“It could enhance workers’ productivity but also threatens some jobs. Investing in digital infrastructure and skills, as well as in strong social safety nets will determine the pace of AI adoption and its impact on productivity," she said.
