President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed strong disapproval for foreign diplomats who interfere in the country’s domestic politics.

Addressing journalists at the Jubilee House Friday, he described the behaviour as “improper” insisting that most of them are also fuelled by “misinformation”.

The Netherlands’ Ambassador to Ghana, Ron Strikker, came under heavy criticism following a suggestion that government should extend the 'Ghana Beyond Aid' agenda to cover "A Ghana Beyond Corruption".

Ron Strikker in a statement subsequently blamed the media for misreporting him.

The UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Ian Walker, is also reported to have urged government to deal with political party vigilantism during elections because it risks damaging Ghana’s global reputation as a stable democracy.

Disturbed by these developments, veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratte Junior, who was among the media practitioners the president interacted with at the Seat of Government, asked what the government was doing about them.

Nana Akufo-Addo in his response agrees that “This is a matter that has been going on for far too long and all of us have been complicit in it.”

“For myself, I think it is improper [and] it is not because necessarily the remarks are being directed at me. Some of them as far as I am concerned is also on the basis of misinformation,” he said.

He wondered if Ghanaian diplomats posted to “The Netherlands or Ambassador in the Netherlands or in Denmark or England or France,” would be allowed to by their Foreign Offices “to take a position on internal domestic issues”

“We know from the world that we have that there is one law for some people and another law for others,” he lamented.

He expressed the belief that the matter is “a genuine issue that has been raised and I believe we should all contribute to the debate on this matter.”
