President Akufo-Addo has lifted the ban on educational institutions for only final year students to return and study for their respective exit examinations.

Speaking during his 10^th address to the nation on measures government is taking to fight the virus, the President explained that the decision was reached after consultations with teacher unions across the country.

This announcement forms part of what he described as a ‘phased approach’ to reopening the country in a bid to live with the virus in safety.

President Akufo-Addo explained that “final year university students are to report to their universities on June 15.”

“Final year senior high school (SHS) 3 students together with SHS 2 Gold Track students on June 22.”

He also revealed that final year JHS 3 students are to resume on June 29, 2020.

The President, however, emphasised that “JHS 3 classes will comprise a maximum of 30 students; SHS classes a maximum of 25 students.”

The university lectures are also expected to “take place with half the class sizes.”

“All final year students of educational and training institutions, which are being managed by Ministries other than the Education Ministry, are to return to school on 15th June to complete their exit examinations,” according to the President.

Ministry of Education and heads of public and private educational institutions are expected to spearhead the fumigation and disinfection of schools ahead of the implementation of the President’s latest directive.

The Ministry is will also provide students, teaching and non-teaching staff with re-usable face masks to help adhere to the protocols recommended by health experts.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all other educational facilities, private and public, for non-final year students, will remain closed,” the President added.

Further details on the enumerated guidelines for the safe reopening of our schools and universities are expected to be provided by the Education Ministry in the coming days.
