Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil is asking President Akufo-Addo to be careful when commenting on issues making airwaves, instead of allowing himself to be dragged into trivial squabbles.

His comment follows the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, where President Akufo-Addo touched on a decision by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to compile a new voters register, the closure of some radio stations, the fight against illegal mining and other issues he deemed important.

“I think the President has made statements around some matters that he shouldn’t have. Looking at the issue of the shutdown of radio stations, I think the president should stay out of that discussion. There are however areas that I think the President is duty-bound to speak on, for instance disbanding those illegal militias, he has no choice and to the extent that he gives the impression that he is not minded to do so, I am terribly disappointed” Mr. Bentil said.

President Akufo-Addo during his address to Ghanaians touted some of his government’s achievements, together with what it plans to do for the next one year especially in the fight against corruption and galamsey.

While the Majority in Parliament has lauded the speech, describing it as detailed, the Minority says it is unimpressed hence the decision to walk out before its delivery by the President.

Ghanaians who monitored the speech and took to social media to express their opinions said it was a compilation of previous messages by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and response to various allegations thrown at the government by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But expressing his thoughts, Mr. Bentil who was speaking to host of JoyNews’ Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini insists the President must concentrate only on issues that have the tendency to affect the fundamental structure of the country and not get involved in issues that can be handled or addressed by state institutions under his governance.

Backing this assertion, the Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante said the President acknowledging how dicey and sensitize some issues are, will help him determine the ones he can comment on and those to avoid.
