Joy Sports understands that all players at Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities receive at least GHS 1,000 in monthly salaries.
For a country where poor player remuneration is an annual conversation, this comes as step in the right direction. Some top flight players earn as little as GHS 400 monthly.
Indeed, a report by Accra-based Angel FM in July 2020 said the highest paid GPL player was then-Inter Allies hotshot Victorien Adebayor, who was reportedly on about GHS 7,000 a month - a figure which is an extreme outlier in the league.
With clubs in Ghana Premier teams allowed to register up to 30 players, Legon Cities spend no less than GHS 150,000 on player salaries every month.
A source in the club revealed that players are motivated financially to ensure that the club reaches its long-term vision.
“The idea of the bankroller was to make Legon Cities a big club in African football. In order for the club to qualify for Africa, players will need to give their best. That’s why we believe we have to treat our players well and motivate them.”
Reaching Africa looks an astronomical task as the Royals are currently wandering in the relegation zone with 14 points from 13 games.
