The National Democratic Congress Flagbearer for election 2024, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that individuals who have misused funds related to the yet-to-be-constructed Keta Port project will be held accountable following thorough investigations if he is elected President.
During the final part of his tour in the Keta Constituency of the Volta Region, just a few minutes’ drive from the port side, he emphasised that the government has allocated $8 million from the dividends declared by the Meridian Port Services deal, which was initiated by the NDC government, to construct an administration block for what he describes as a non-existent port.
Mr Mahama said the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GAPOHA), a partner in the MPS deal, receives a share of the dividends from the new port.
He noted that GAPOHA has earned $280 million since the port was built.
Mr Mahama stressed the importance of carrying out a comprehensive research and needs assessment before establishing a new port between Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé which are both major ports.
He said it was important not to repeat the mistakes of the Boankra inland port project in the Ashanti Region, which has become a “white elephant.”
He mentioned how initially, $70 million was allocated to the Boankra port, and how $8 million has been allocated to construct an administrative block for the Keta port.
“When we come, we are going to audit Keta port. We are going to investigate it. Anybody who has chopped money there we would hold them accountable".
