According to the company, tensions in the community escalated into civil unrest, including an attack on military camps and the invasion of mining operational areas. The company further reported that the unrest resulted in significant damage to contractor equipment in addition to the fatality.
“Asanko shares in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The company said it is working closely with local authorities, government officials, and community leaders to address the situation. It also reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue with stakeholders as investigations proceed.
Asanko Gold Ghana added that further updates will be provided once investigations into the incident are concluded.
