Some executives and youth of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawase constituency have provided financial support to one of the party's parliamentary aspirants.

Mubarick Masawudu, an NDC parliamentary aspirant, has received about GHS 5,000 to help him purchase a nomination form.

Another group in the diaspora is said to have raised US $10,000 in support of Mr. Masawudu.

According to the financial supporters, Mr. Masawudu has contributed towards building a formidable NDC in the constituency and therefore needs some assistance to represent the party in parliament.

Spokesperson of the group, Abubakar Ahmed Ibrahim, said Mr. Masawudu has successfully secured meaningful and sustainable jobs for the youth of Asawase both in Ghana and abroad.

"This aligns with his overall goal of building the human capital base of the constituency. We are convinced that when given the nod Comrade Masawudu through his Youth Empowerment Program would eradicate the longstanding financial struggle the branches go through making them ineffective," he added.

Mr. Ahmed further noted that, the policies and programs laid out by the Mr. Masawudu give them some assurance that when he becomes the Member of Parliament, the Asawase Constituency will witness transformation.

Mr. Masawudu was disqualified from running in the Asawase NDC parliamentary primaries in September 2019 by the party's leadership, allowing the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, to run unopposed.

Following his disqualification, supporters stormed the party’s regional office to protest.

They burned tyres and sang protest songs, indicating their opposition to the party's decision to suspend Mr Mubarick.

According to a release signed by the NDC's then-General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the decision to disqualify Mr Masawudu came after the committee for the settlement of outstanding disputes, chaired by a former Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, met on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

The statement said, “By this decision, Muntaka Mubarak goes unopposed and for reason stands elected as the parliamentary candidate for the Asawase Constituency.”
