The Ashanti Division of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed outrage over the attack on the residence of its Divisional Chairman, Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, has left the chairman's family traumatised and raised serious concerns about their safety.
According to a press release issued by the GMA, unknown individuals entered Dr Baidoo's bungalow premises around 7:00 pm while he was at work.
It said the perpetrators cut down a giant tree on the compound, causing it to crash onto the house, saying the impact severely damaged the roof and some personal belongings inside the home.
The GMA said that Dr Baidoo’s wife and two-year-old son, who were inside the house at the time, were trapped and left traumatised by the ordeal.
They noted that despite their cries for help, the intruders fled the scene without offering any assistance.
"It took some passers-by to assist them out of the house after which they made calls to Dr. Baidoo who rushed to the scene," part of the statement read, noting that Dr Baidoo has since filed a formal complaint with the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters in Kumasi.
The Association has strongly condemned what it describes as a “wicked and callous act” that endangered the lives of Dr Baidoo’s family.
They are therefore demanding the immediate commencement of investigations and arrest of the culprits, prosecution and punishment of the culprits and compensation of Dr Baidoo's family for the damage to his belongings and emotional stress.
In light of the attack, the GMA has called for immediate police protection for Dr. Baidoo and his family as investigations proceed.
While pledging to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the culprits are brought to justice, the association has warned that it cannot guarantee restraint if the matter is not handled with urgency.
"As a law-abiding Association, we resolve to give our able Police enough time and space for them to work to apprehend the culprits. However, we would like to reiterate that the division cannot not be held responsible for any drastic actions it resolves to take if the matter is not handled expeditiously."
The GMA has assured the public that its Divisional and National Executives are closely monitoring developments and will determine further actions based on the progress of investigations.
