A member of the Alan Kyeremanten campaign, Nana Ohene Ntow, says the party risks destroying its image if the events of last weekend's super delegates conference are not investigated.
His comments follow an attack on the North East regional coordinator for Alan Kyerematen, Ali Zakaria, after he had questioned some voters who lifted up their ballot paper to the full view of delegates after voting.
According to Ali, he was beaten mercilessly by some unidentified delegates; leaving him with a swollen eye and bruises on his face.
Describing the incident as “highly regrettable”, Ohene Ntow stressed that the incident was a smudge on the high democratic ideals of the NPP.
“I regret very deeply that in an internal election when the whole party hierarchy in collaboration with all stakeholders, contestants, electoral commission, the police, have come up with rules and regulations for an election to be peacefully conducted and it was all to the extent that this election will generate confidence and trust among the rank and file of the parties, that there could be this kind of a smudge on the sheet, I think it is highly regrettable.
“If in our internal elections we who pride ourselves with the highest democratic ideals cannot show Ghanaians and the world that we can live up to these ideals, then it is highly regrettable,” he said.
Disappointed flagbearer hopeful of the party, Kwadwo Poku, has also called on the President to demand the immediate resignation of the North East minister, Yidana Zakaria over the incident.
He said, the minister had failed to ensure an incident-free electoral process in the North East region.
“I want to call on the President to let the Regional Minister resign because what happened in North East is a stain on the party and it’s sad for the internal politics of the party,” he said.
Meanwhile, following the super delegates’ conference, four NPP flagbearer aspirants, including Alan Kyerematen, have successfully made it into the next round.
The fifth position is not settled as Addai Nimo and Boakye Agyarko are headed for a tie-breaker.
