Former Presidential Spokesperson, Mahama Ayariga, has waded into allegations of mismanagement leveled against the former Confiscated Vehicles Committee chairman, Carl Wilson.
Mr Ayariga, who himself has in recent times come under fire for purchasing tractors meant for poor farmers, has risen strongly to the defense of Mr Wilson, saying the former chairman did nothing wrong.
“There was nothing to show criminality, there was nothing to show he wasn’t acting within his remits,” Mr Ayariga told Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
Deputy Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Alex Segbefia, is another person in government known to have publicly defended Mr Wilson over the accusations of corruption at the Confiscated Assets Committee.
Mr Wilson was recently given the sack by President Mills hours after several National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters massed up at the party’s national headquarters to demand his dismissal.
Mr Ayariga, who is also Deputy Trade Minister, said he recalls that while at the Presidency, the several complaints that were lodged with President Mills against Mr Wilson lacked merit.
On reasons why Mr Wilson was axed, Mr Ayariga said there was the situation of “pressure over a resource that was in a very limited supply,” and that the dismissal was not necessarily because Mr Wilson had been found guilty of any offense.
Responding to what government’s efforts at creating jobs was, Mr Ayariga noted that government would ensure that “sustainable jobs” are available for Ghanaians to do by the end of the party’s tenure, adding, “Everybody who is capable of working will find something viable to do.”
“One year is not enough for a government to be able to create jobs to deal with the problems of several hundreds of thousands of people.”
Mr Ayariga said the President is a “listening president” who monitors a mix of radio phone-ins and telephone calls to his office to ensure all varying interests are satisfied.
The Deputy Trade Minister also dismissed the suggestion that the numerous violent agitations by party sympathizers were as a result of government’s under-performance.
