Andre and Jordan Ayew are on the brink of relegation from the English Premier League after taking part in a 1-0 beating of their Swansea side on Tuesday's night.
As for Southampton, they are on the cusp of a thrilling vindication for masterminding Premier League survival no-one thought possible.
By beating Swansea City 1-0 tonight they put three points between the two sides, meaning that only a nine-goal swing against them on Sunday can send Saints down, or keep Swansea up.
The result also confirmed relegation for West Bromwich Albion.
Coming into the tie, both sides were level on 33 points (17th and 18th in the table) heading into the game at the Liberty Stadium. Carlos Carvalhal and Mark Hughes knew that the losers would be most likely to face relegation to the Championship.
Swansea started brightly in front of a buoyant home crowd, but Southampton had the better chances of the first half as Lukasz Fabianski twice saved from Charlie Austin. Jordan Ayew was lively throughout the game and was probably Swansea's best player on the day, creating chances and making some for himself.
Andre was less key, as he struggled to find a dominant position. Both players featured for 90 minutes.
With Southampton facing Manchester City on the final day and Swansea hosting already-relegated Stoke City, victory was key for the Saints - and substitute Gabbiadini struck with less than 20 minutes remaining.
The Swans play already-relegated Stoke in their last game and would hope that Huddersfield - who need just one point to be safe - lose against Chelsea (on Wednesday) and Arsenal.
