Three-time world boxing champion Azumah Nelson has been appointed Vice chairman and Special Technical Advisor to the newly formed Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC).
The Committee which was inaugurated on Monday by Sports Minister Kofi Adams has been tasked with overseeing professional boxing in Ghana.
Former Ghana Boxing Authority president Samir Captan will chair the nine-member committee, which brings together professionals from diverse fields.
Speaking at the ceremony in Accra, the Minister said the move was necessary to restore integrity, professionalism, and safety to a sport that has produced global legends such as Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Joseph Agbeko.
He noted that recent years had seen a decline in standards, citing unprofessional conduct and weak regulatory protocols. The tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena was described as a wake-up call that underlined the urgency for reforms.
The IMC, chaired by Samir Captan with Azumah Nelson as Vice Chairman, will oversee professional boxing activities, restructure the Professional Boxing Association, and ensure improved medical, insurance, and safety standards for athletes
