Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that Ghana will launch its first local music streaming platform in November.
Addressing stakeholders in the creative arts sector, Dr Bawumia emphasised the need for a homegrown solution to help Ghanaian musicians reap better financial rewards from their work.
“Spotify and other platforms are externally owned, so it’s not surprising that the payments to our musicians are very little,” he said, stressing that current platforms don’t provide substantial returns for artists in Ghana.
“The issue for us has been to ensure we have a local streaming platform where we can put all the catalogues from A to Z that we can find in Ghana.”
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the collaborative effort between MUSIGA, the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), music producers, and the private sector to make this platform a reality.
He explained that the platform is designed to help manage revenue, track royalties, and maximize opportunities for content creators.
“I’m very happy to let you know that the work has been completed,” Dr. Bawumia shared with enthusiasm.
“We are ready to launch the first local streaming platform for Ghanaian musicians and film producers next month, in November.”
This new platform is expected to provide a more equitable revenue model for Ghanaian creatives, allowing them to better track and collect royalties while creating opportunities for sustainable growth in the industry.
