Relief has come for the Muslim Community in Kumasi after Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, intervened to pay 56-year-old ground rent arrears for the Kumasi Central Mosque.
Muslim leaders have been under pressure to settle the debt which had been accumulated since 1964 or lose the land on which the mosque is sited.
The Muslim community had managed to raise GHS35,000 of the GHS120,000 owed the state.
They appealed to the Vice President who came to their aid with a sum of GHS85,000.
The intervention paves way for the place of worship to undergo rehabilitation into a modern standardised facility.
Dr Audu Rauf who presented the cheque to the leadership of the Muslim community in Kumasi said “the Vice President has taken it upon himself to support the renovation” of the mosque.
He said plans are underway and work would begin immediately after the arrears are settled.
