Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most formidable flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing his strong performance in the 2024 general election.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah drew parallels between Dr. Bawumia’s political journey and that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, noting that similar doubts were raised about Kufuor’s chances after his initial electoral defeat.
He recalled that despite losing his first presidential bid, Mr. Kufuor went on to secure over 50 per cent of the vote when he was elected flagbearer again, eventually becoming one of Ghana’s most successful presidents.
“During Kufuor’s time, people claimed that because he contested the main elections and lost, he couldn’t run again as the flagbearer. However, when he was elected as the flagbearer the next time, he won over 50 per cent of the votes and went on to become one of Ghana’s most successful presidents,” he stated.
According to the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP, Dr. Bawumia performed even better than Kufuor in his first election, despite the economic and political challenges facing the NPP in 2024.
He argued that claims suggesting Dr. Bawumia cannot win future elections are unfounded, stressing that with unity, renewed confidence, and improved party organisation, the NPP can return to power.
“Bawumia even performed better than Kufuor in his first election. Given the challenges we faced in 2024, Bawumia’s ability to achieve those results shows that the argument against his viability doesn’t hold. If we keep faith in him and actively support him as our flagbearer, we can win the election. Bawumia is a formidable candidate, and if we rally behind him and work to improve our party as a whole, we can emerge victorious,” he said.
