The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, says the recent endorsement of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by 118 NPP parliamentary candidates rather exposes the weaknesses of his campaign.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, January 8, spokesperson for the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, Kwasi Kwarteng, dismissed suggestions that the endorsement poses a threat to their camp ahead of the January 31, 2026, flagbearership election.
According to him, the move instead highlights how much support Dr Bawumia has lost over time.
“How can this be a blow to our camp?” Mr Kwarteng asked. “The said endorsement just demonstrates how failing and weak the Dr Bawumia campaign has become.”
He recalled that Dr Bawumia’s campaign previously enjoyed overwhelming institutional backing, including the support of Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, as well as thousands of government appointees.
“If a campaign that once had almost 137 MPs, nearly 6,000 government appointees and all 276 MMDCEs is now showcasing 118 parliamentary candidates as proof of strength, then clearly something has gone wrong,” he argued.
Mr Kwarteng described the endorsement as “cosmetic showmanship,” insisting that a truly strong campaign would not rely on such displays.
He said the Kennedy Agyapong campaign remains focused on engaging polling station executives across the country, whom he described as the true custodians of the party’s sovereignty.
“Our strategy is to go directly to the over 209,000 polling station executives. We believe power resides with them, not just the top hierarchy,” he stated.
