NPP presidential aspirant Dr. Bryan Acheampong has called on party delegates to set aside internal rivalries and focus on cohesion as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates in Suhum on Monday, January 19, during the second leg of his Eastern Region campaign tour, Dr. Acheampong stressed that divisions from the 2023 primaries continue to affect party unity and could weaken the NPP’s prospects if left unresolved.
“The pain from the 2023 primaries is still fresh in the minds of many members, so it is vital that we put aside individual ambitions and rally behind a candidate who can unite the party,” he said. “I ask you to support me so we can restore cohesion and reclaim power for the NPP in 2028.”
He further questioned the current approach to internal contests, urging delegates to prioritise collective strength over factional loyalties.
“Have you asked yourself why we are running the party this way? Our goal must be unity to secure power. Unity must come before everything else,” Dr. Acheampong noted.
Highlighting the risks of lingering divisions, he warned that cross-camp animosities could undermine future electoral success.
“I asked myself who believes that when Ken wins, Bawumia’s supporters will back him in 2028, or vice versa. This cannot continue. I am the candidate who can bring the party together,” he added.
Dr Acheampong is one of five candidates aspiring to win the flagbearer contest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to lead the opposition party in the 2028 elections.
The order of candidates on the ballot paper is as follows:
- Ken Ohene Agyapong: Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central.
- Dr. Bryan Acheampong: Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi.
- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: Former Vice President and the party's 2024 flagbearer.
- Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum: Former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe.
- Kwabena Agyei Agyepong: Former General Secretary of the NPP.
