Arsenal striker, Eddie Nketiah, has explained his decision to play for England at the senior level ahead of Ghana.

The 24-year-old said choosing to continue playing for England felt like a natural progression because it has been his aspiration since childhood.

Nketiah was born in London but of Ghanaian descent and was still eligible to represent the Black Stars at senior level despite featuring for England’s youth teams.

He received his first senior call-up for this Month’s Euro 2024 qualifying games against Ukraine and Scotland.

Speaking about the call-up, Nketiah said it was something he could not turn down and is looking forward to his debut.

“I had an aspiration to play here and Like I said once the call-up was there and the offer was on the table, it was really hard to turn down and I feel that it is the natural progression for me at this stage,” he said.

“And I felt now was the good time to make that step and obviously, I’m really happy to be here and hopefully, I can go one and help this team this week and get some caps.”

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, said in July that they were still having conversations with Eddie Nketiah about the possibility of switching nationality to play for Ghana at the senior level.

However, Nketiah will be ineligible to play for the Black Stars again if he gets minutes against Ukraine on Saturday or Scotland on Tuesday.
