With in-persons church services having limited numbers and some congregants still very unsure about their safety in churches in the wake of Covid-19, the church is beginning to turn to technology as a means for worship.

The church has not only turn to technology and social media as the means for service, but for revenue generation, Ghana News Agency at Tema uncovered during interaction with church leaders and congregations.

The GNA uncovered that congregations were feeling the financial impact of the pandemic and the “COVID-19 new normal” which has affected their contributions through offerings, tithes and other seed sowing practice.

Scores of people have therefore decided to avoid in-person church service as it reduces cost of transportation and other expenditures and the issue of offering was not mandatory as compared to in-service worship.

The church has also responded with a swift shift to digital means to connect and engage congregants, with even safer way to collect tithes and other contributions through mobile money, some Church Leaders told the GNA.

Church collections in the forms of regular and reliable tithes and donations from congregants are the most significant income stream for majority of religious bodies, therefore the new normal church service mainly online has affected its revenue generation.

In a bid to overcome the new normal challenges an electronic or digital platform has been created to facilitate and sustain the revenue streams.

The Churches have adopted these means as flexible and remarkable means for members to contribute and pay offerings and tithes.

Mr Saviour Kwaku Dzage, a Co-founder of Asoriba Church Technology Service Provider, explained that digital platform continues to serve as new model for the church under the new normal.

He indicated that it was important for churches and congregations to leverage on the technology to encourage mobile giving as means to expand church outreach and further seeks to make giving more accessible to an increasingly mobile society.
