The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shama, Mr. Enoch Kojo Appiah, on Friday ordered the dismantling of a corn mill machine installed in a school block at Abotaryie in the Shama District. He tasked the school authorities and assembly member of the area, Mr. Mark Arthur, to carry out the dismantling exercise before Monday June 24. The DCE said the old school block in which the corn mill machine had been installed by an indigene of the town would be renovated into a teachers’ bungalow. Mr. Appiah gave the directive during the celebration of this year’s World Child Labour Day held on the theme, ”Ghana Take Action Now, Say No to Child Labour in Domestic Work” at Abotaryie. The programme was organized by the Social Welfare Department to create awareness about the negative effects of child labour on children’s education and welfare. The DCE warned that if by Monday June 24 the directive had not been carried out, he would dispatch police personnel to the town to undertake the exercise. He wondered how somebody could install a corn mill machine in the classroom without the knowledge of the school authorities and the assemblyman, describing the situation as unfortunate. The DCE entreated parents and guardians to invest in their children’s education for their future, and advised them to practice family planning methods to control their births to the number that they could cater for. The District Director of the Social Welfare Department, Madam Constance Baiden, cautioned parents to desist from engaging children in hazardous activities that would be detrimental to their health and welfare. She said children have the right to quality education, good health, nutrition and shelter, and that, it is the responsibility of parents to provide them all that to ensure their proper development. The school pupils performed a play on harmful effects of child labour.
