President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, says dishonesty, corruption and thievery among some Ghanaian workers are blocking job creation efforts of employers.
President Akufo-Addo in his May Day speech assured Ghana’s private sector of protecting jobs by easing the cost of doing business.
But GUTA’s president fears these efforts amount to nothing if the private sector continues to suffer at the hands of dishonest workers.
“Each week, I get disturbing calls from Ghanaian employers about how they are being duped by a chunk of employees from the ports to the markets. Many of these employers, who have eyed million-dollar projects are folding up and exploring markets elsewhere,” he told Joy Business.
Not holding brief for these employers, Dr. Obeng asserts that many jobs preserved for Ghanaians in the informal sector are being taken over by foreign nationals due to a lack of trust.
Meanwhile, Dr. Obeng has called for a reorientation of Ghana’s informal sector labour force on professionalism, productivity and skills acquisition.
He fears that until this is achieved, potential investors will continue looking outside for their labour because of a lack of faith and skill.
